
Aedanus Burke, born in Galway, Ireland, 1743, immigrated to the American Colonies landing first in Virginia, 1769, then settled in South Carolina in 1775.
In 1788, Burke was a member of the convention called to considered ratification of the Constitution of the United States. He opposed it.
Burke was elected to the First Congress on March 4, 1789, as the Anti-Administration party candidate. He served one term, leaving in March 3, 1791.
In 1789, one day after the United States House of Representatives passed the First Amendment to the Constitution protecting a free press, Burke introduced a resolution to prohibit reporters from covering the proceedings.
